Use it or lose it
This year, Costa Rica introduced all new banknotes for our currency – the colon is named after Christopher Columbus. The new bills are colorful and quite beautiful. We have new 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and, for the first time, 50,000 colones paper money. The one thousand colones bill is plastic so it goes right through the wash without a problem. I know this for a fact.
But more importantly, the old bills will go out of circulation 31 December 2012. So, if you’re holding onto Costa Rican money for your next tropical vacation, you’d better think about coming sooner rather than later. After the first of the year, that old bill won’t be any good. Use it or lose it.
Wow – I didn’t know the money was named after Christopher Columbus. Neat fact!
After Dec. the old bill’s will only be redeemable at the Centaral Bank headquarters in downtown San Jose! If you click on the C50,000 bill posted recently & click again where it say’s “see more” it contains this info & alot more interesting background on the images, kind of a mini history lesson of Costa Rica.
